Our Products

At Vogelsang Boerdery, we grow more than just produce—we grow a philosophy. Nestled in the Schoemanshoek Valley of the Klein Karoo, our farm uses sustainable, organic, and eco-conscious methods to nurture a wide variety of crops. Each product we cultivate reflects a commitment to quality, community, and care for the environment. From the moment a bud breaks to the day a fruit is picked, we let nature take the lead—and we follow with thoughtful stewardship.

Rooted in Nature, Grown with Purpose

At Vogelsang Boerdery, we grow more than just produce—we grow a philosophy. Nestled in the Schoemanshoek Valley of the Klein Karoo, our farm uses sustainable, organic, and eco-conscious methods to nurture a wide variety of crops. Each product we cultivate reflects a commitment to quality, community, and care for the environment. From the moment a bud breaks to the day a fruit is picked, we let nature take the lead—and we follow with thoughtful stewardship.

The Olive Hedges

What began as a visual landscaping element has grown into one of the most rewarding features of our farm—our Barnea olive trees. Hardy and productive, these olive hedges now provide a robust annual harvest, carefully picked by hand during the crisp months of April and May.

Once harvested, the olives are cold-pressed by a trusted local farmer to preserve the full character and health benefits of the oil. The result is around 250 litres of smooth, golden olive oil every year—bottled by hand and sold exclusively at our restaurant. It’s a local product with global character: rich in antioxidants, velvety in texture, and produced sustainably from root to bottle.

The Raisins

A newer but fast-growing venture on the farm, our Selma Pete raisin vines are already showing promise. In just under a year, we’ve cultivated 1.66 hectares of this early-ripening, high-quality variety. These raisins are more than just sweet treats—they’re nutrient-rich, iron-packed, and a wonderful natural energy source.

With their ability to yield up to 20 tons per hectare, these vines represent a sustainable future for our farm. We anticipate our first full harvest in 2025 and look forward to offering a product that’s both good for you and good for the planet.

The Artichokes

At Vogelsang Boerdery, our artichokes are a true labour of love — grown with care, patience, and respect for the land. Nestled in the fertile soils of the Klein Karoo, these hardy plants thrive under the region’s unique climate, producing tight, flavourful heads packed with nutrients and texture.

Whether destined for local markets, farm-style feasts, or gourmet kitchens, our artichokes stand out for their rich taste and versatility. By growing them sustainably, we’re not only offering a premium product — we’re investing in the future of food that’s good for people and the planet.

The Vineyards

Our vineyards are a celebration of both tradition and innovation. Planted between 440m and 540m above sea level on south-facing slopes, the vines are naturally sheltered from the harshest rays of the Karoo sun. The layout of each vineyard is intentional, with a double triple-wired trellising system that supports optimal airflow and fruit development.

We focus on Mediterranean cultivars like Shiraz, Viognier, and the proudly South African Pinotage. These varieties are perfectly suited to our dry climate and mineral-rich soils. Beyond the grapes themselves, our viticulture practices reflect our belief in nurturing the soil—using cover crops, crop rotation, and homegrown compost to maintain healthy biodiversity. Every cluster of grapes is a product of care, patience, and ecological responsibility.

The Beehives

Bees are more than just farm helpers—they’re an essential part of our ecosystem. At Vogelsang, we house 50 thriving hives, each managed by a skilled local beekeeper. These bees play a critical role in the pollination of our orchards, ensuring better fruit set and healthier trees.

But that’s not all they do. Our bees also gift us with raw, unfiltered honey that we harvest with great care. This honey, available at our farm’s gift shop, is a true taste of the valley—floral, complex, and completely natural. It’s just another way our farm works in harmony with nature.

The Wool Backs

Our flock of Meatmaster sheep are as much a part of the landscape as the orchards themselves. Known for their resilience and gentle temperament, these sheep graze on tailored pastures designed to replenish soil nutrients and improve land health.

Their manure enhances the microbial life in our soils, reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers and closing the loop on our organic farming practices. These animals not only contribute to the ecological balance of our land but also support local food systems with high-quality, ethically raised meat.
